Questions

How can HUSKY help my child?

To grow up healthy, all children and teens need regular checkups at the doctor’s office. Kids get sick and accidents happen. Many youngsters need special care. Sometimes, there’s a hospital stay. To afford good health care, families need health insurance. HUSKY health insurance will help your child get regular and emergency care—and help you afford it.

Is HUSKY for children in working families?

Yes! HUSKY is for children and teenagers in families of all income levels. Youngsters can enroll in HUSKY until they turn 19 years old.

Where can I get more information about HUSKY on the phone?

Call 1-877-CT-HUSKY (1-877-284-8759). Customer information hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Who can apply for HUSKY on a child’s behalf? One of the following adults can apply:

  • Parent with whom the child lives;

  • Non-custodial parent under court order to provide medical support;

  • Legal guardian;

  • Caregiver relative;

  • Foster parent

In addition, a teenager may apply on behalf of himself or herself, depending on the circumstances.

Can I apply from my home?

Yes. Applications can be made by phone and mail.

How does applying by phone work?

Call 1-800-656-6684 to reach application assistance. A customer service representative will answer your questions, begin the application with you, and mail it to you to complete and sign. Application assistance hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Why does the application ask about my family’s income?

Just to determine what part of HUSKY will serve your child, and whether you will pay a monthly premium and small co-payments when your child goes to the doctor (see HUSKY income chart for explanation of HUSKY A and B, and possible costs).

Is there any asset or personal property test to qualify for HUSKY?

No. Families do not have to report assets.

What happens after the application is sent in to HUSKY?

HUSKY staff look at the information and respond to you, usually within two weeks. When your child is accepted into HUSKY, you are asked to ‘enroll’ him or her into a HUSKY health plan (these are sometimes known as HMOs or managed care organizations). HUSKY gives you freedom to choose one of several health plans to coordinate benefits for your children.

How does enrollment work?

HUSKY staff give you information listing the doctors, hospitals and other health care providers that participate in each of the health plans. After you select one of the health plans, a health insurance card is provided for the child. The health insurance card is used for payment when you take your child to the doctor, hospital, pharmacy, or other health care providers. In some cases, you will be asked to make small co-payments.

What health plans can parents choose for their children in HUSKY?

The following health plans are available to HUSKY members:

  • Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BlueCare Family Plan)

  • Community Health Network of CT

  • Traditional Fee-For-Service Medicaid (HUSKY A only)

The application says that it is also a renewal form. What does this mean?

After your child has enrolled in HUSKY, you’ll be asked to renew HUSKY services once a year. This means that you want to re-enroll your child. HUSKY will send you a renewal notice and form through the mail. It’s very important that you send in the renewal form to continue health coverage.

What is HUSKY Plus?

HUSKY Plus offers supplemental services for children with special needs in physical health care. HUSKY Plus services are available to most children in HUSKY B (see income chart). For children in HUSKY A, excellent special needs benefits are also available.

Are mental health and substance abuse treatment services available?

Yes. HUSKY members can receive these services by contacting the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership toll free at 1-877-552-8247; TTY/TDD 1-866-218-0525. They also have a website at www.ctbhp.com . Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership will coordinate benefits and refer members to service providers.
